George W. Bush and the Dalai Lama
Last Friday, after July 6th birthday wishes were sent out to both W. and the Dalai Lama on NPR's Diane Rehm show, Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune commented, "What does that say about astrology?" This set off a flurry of blogging about how since they have the same birthday, this disproves astrology. After all, one is the exiled spiritual leader of his country revered around the world, and the other is...George W. Bush.
While it's true that these two men were born on the same day, it was over ten years apart, giving them very different generational planets. The birth chart of George W. Bush shows a Cancer with a strong Leo influence, with many planets -- including Pluto -- in the First House in this sign. The Dalai Lama's chart also has Pluto in the First House, but in Cancer. The Dalai Lama has a grand trine in water, with Saturn in Pisces and Jupiter in Scorpio trining his Sun. In contrast, W. has hard aspects to his Sun, including a square to his Moon in Libra.
But even if born in the same year, most astrologers don't believe that a birth chart seals your fate, but is the pattern of energies you're working with in this lifetime. There's always free will to choose your path, and overcoming those built-in squares and oppositions can be a lifelong task. The bottom line is these men have evolved into who they are from the choices they've made in life.
