Growing Your Own

Monday August 18, 2008

The story of the Dervaes urban homestead in Pasadena, told in the video Homegrown Revolution is inspiring to anyone who senses that the future belongs to the self-reliant. On just one-tenth of an acre, this family of four grows most of their vegetables, along with herbs, edible flowers and a menagerie of producing hens and goats. Imagine if everyone turned their yard into a lush source of sustenance. America waking up to its farming roots pleases Saturn in Virgo on a few fronts -- notably it brings the community back together through bartering, and it re-aligns us with nature's cycles.

Jules Dervaes is another practical sage, emerging from the back to the Land hippy generation that was energized by the Pluto-Uranus conjunction in earthy Virgo of the late 60s. When the societal transformer (Pluto) met the awakened radical (Uranus), a whole generation rode a wave of change with a unique Virgoan flavor. Things like natural healing, living in harmony with Mother Earth, taking a critical look at the establishment emerged with the force of a social revolution. With the teacher Saturn in Virgo, the real-life lessons and refinements of that generation are coming to full fruition. The Dervaes mini-farm , for example, is not meant to be a showcase, but a working homestead that models that "small is beautiful and productive."

Many of us grew up with small gardens by the kitchen door, and have a legacy of earth-wisdom, if we dig deep enough into the roots of the family tree. Jupiter in Capricorn this year, adds a solid feel to those roots of the past, as something to build on for the future. During World War II, Americans grew about 40% of their food in backyard or rooftop Victory Gardens. These gardens were seen as part of the war effort, since it kept Americans from the ration line, and left more resources for the fighting.

The enemy of freedom today is greed and the rush to control all of life through seed patents and genetic modification. It's not far-fetched to imagine waiting in food lines at some future time, and having no choice about the nutritional integrity (another Virgo signature) of what's available. Says Dervaes, "Growing your own food is the most dangerous thing you can do on the face of this Earth -- you are in danger of becoming free." It's a way to shake off the passivity and myth of helplessness, and remember that we were once (not so long ago) a nation of farmers, intimately tied to the seasons and local harvests. And it's easy to see how the simple act of planting and saving heirloom seeds, our heritage, and the result of generations (Jupiter in Capricorn) agriculture in this country, is a path to freedom.

Hey Molly!!!

You told me your mercury is in cancer, i always found mercury in cancer people a genius in what they know… My brother he got the same position, he suffered from psicologicals problem in youth, had hard medications, because his “fantasy” mind wouldn´t let him forget the word sex… yes, sex… he couldnt stop thinking of it, he used to claim that his mind would think/fly without a root, a comum sense of feet on the ground thinking… but now, he has improved a lot, no medications, no nothing… but still, he has some problems…
But i dont know if he has it retrograded as you have!
i like the way mercury retograded speaks and express, it gets me wonder a lot how do you think, it is diferent and looks like they way you guys think is always backwards … you know what i mean? i dont think i explained they way i wanted… but anyway…

Are you talking about of saturn in scorpio as well? i totally agree with this quotation, they seem to have this the only major factor to try to persuade us with this “(new) inovation” experiences, leading us to believe that this is our ultimate faith in keeping humans on earth… i fell like thats gonna be a huge problem in a further future…

“Growing your own food is the most dangerous thing you can do on the face of this Earth — you are in danger of becoming free.”

I dont undersatnd this quote much, is he been ironic about the subject?

Hi Rafael,
Mercury retro in cancer is like talking from inside a well. I’m drawn to poetry, and writing that’s spare, and think I could even go further in that direction — with haiku blogs!
Re: he’s talking about gardening as a step away from dependence on the corporate farm system. Being dangerous to the power-that-be, so it’s a good kind of danger, one that is an act of breaking free.

Molly,
Your piece on “Growing Your Own” was well-written, timely–and I hope–useful to me for another reason= My soulmate and I were tasked at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence with preparing for the coming planetary upheavals.
We have a farmstead in the Texas Hill Country but are getting too old to work it effectively. We knew better than to use our own criteria for finding a farm-bred young couple to help us through the impending hard times–not that there is anything wrong with our judgment, but we do recognize our own biases enough to know that our selection would best be left up to the Universe. Perhaps your venue might be the right Path for finding them. They will be sophisticated in Native American spiritualiy but not exclusively. Our 1987 spiritual tasking, to our astonishment, was decidedly Native American.

Hi C. Brazil,
That’s beautiful country. I was in Neu Braunfels, Berne and San Antonio in May. I’m sure you have a lot to offer. And the right ones will cross your path.
warmest regards to you!

I find it distressing to see my beloved Mother Earth being paved over and turned into parking lots, shopping malls, office buildings and sub-divisions. Trash strewn on the roadsides and washing up on shorelines makes my heart ache. People seem careless and numb to what’s going on around them. They seem sucked into this “matrix” they call reality. I feel sad by what I see. I hope they wake up. We are Nature and Nature is us.
I wish I could use my land to be self-reliant, but I love my trees and would never cut them down for more sun. “Growing your own food is the most dangerous thing you can do on the face of the Earth-you are in danger of being free.” is a wonderful statement. And full of truth. It reminds me of the book “The Celestine Prophecy” and the people on the mountain who ate what they grew and who would come and go from this plane at will. Now that’s being free!

Hi Anne,
This week, I found this Earth meditation via Conscious Media Network. Here’s the link.
http://www.consciousmedianetwork.com/radio/regina.htm
I feel a lot of the same distress about the Earth. You are not alone!
I like this meditation because it puts what many of us are feeling into Earth. And the fact that we’re also picking up on Her distress. That if Mother Earth is a conscious entity, she is calling to us. And the volcanos, earthquakes, all that, is her reaction to being so out of balance. It also introduces the idea that we’re moving into a new vibratory field as a solar system, and that’s what the Earth is reacting to, as well.
It’s growing more clear that it’s time to turn toward that deeper reality. I’m with you on that path! And I hope more start seeing beyond the matrix that we’ve accepted as real. ‘Cause it’s starting to look kinda unreal….with a vision beyond to replace it.
Also — check out the interview with Sharron Rose. She talks about how the ancients lived off light. It reminds me of the yogis that live off sunshine.

re: the Matrix, cultural trance, dominator trance, mass mind control — the beast with many names.
I recently found this site called Break the Matrix, here’s the link:

Smart, awake, civic-minded and thinking outside the box of the two party system. My sister is conservative and I have been a lifelong dem. this year we meet at a point a lot of Americans are finding themselves. A Zogby poll shows 2 of 3 would like to have another Choice of presidential candidates. if you’re tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, check out this site. I’m old enough to remember Civics class, and realize we’ve veered off our Constitutional moorings….
