Total Eclipse of the Moon - Where Visible?

By , About.com GuideDecember 8, 2011

Follow me on:

Are you planning to watch the Total Lunar Eclipse (Dec 10/11th)? Earth Sky.org says the whole start-to-finish eclipse will be visible to those on the West coast of North America, across the whole Pacific Ocean to Asia, Australia and Eastern Europe. (See Time and Date.com for visibility in your time zone). Those in North America (W. Coast and Canada), will see the total eclipse at Moonset, in the morning hours (Dec 10th), and that means the big red Moon could be enormous!

The luminaries (Sun and Moon) appear larger when they're at the horizon. And the Moon turns red, as I understand it, because of the way the earth's atmosphere is reflected by the sunlight.

Astrologically, the lunar eclipse has a similar vibe as the New Moon, and with mutable mania and Uranus going direct, there's revved chaos in the forecast. With the cells buzzing and nervous system pre-loaded, it's wise to avoid people and situations that send you over the edge. If you feel overwhelmed, see if going into New Moon mode -- grounding and taking a less is more approach -- helps you stay calm and even productive.

Mutable energies amplify the eclipse themes of change, sudden starts or finishes, and breaking apart. The upside is that stuck situations can suddenly be blown to smithereens. With Mercury still in retrograde (until Dec 13/14th), give yourself time to let the pieces settle, and enjoy the wild ideas that zip by. It's a great time to entertain ideas, but not necessarily to act just yet.

There are many points to look for, if you're wanting to meditate on freeing change. The triggering planet Uranus is at the Zero Point of Aries for super stimulating propulsion for whatever is emerging in you -- possibly spiced with the mutable sign themes of new attitudes, new health habits, aspirations, collaborative projects, ideas and imaginings that expand your perception. Look to the house its transiting to see where Uranus is kickstarting your life? For example, Uranus at this degree is in my first house of persona, self image, and I've had dreams lately of feverishly trying on clothes. Some readers may remember my dream of flushing clothes down the toilet! This is definitely a theme, having to do with finding my own style, self-presentation, all First House themes.

Another charged point is the mutable line of Gemini-Sagittarius at 18 degrees, with provocative sidekick Mars at 14 Virgo for the eclipse. Read more about the Gemini Full Moon & Total Eclipse. This is my Moon sign (11 Gemini) and already I'm sensing the ramp up to this Gemini-on-speed eclipse. I'll be taking time for personal reflection and trying not to drink too much coffee! So I will be back with you on the flip side. May it trigger many good things for you!

I added that link (to Time and Date) to get a better sense of best viewing — based on where you are in the world. I am an early riser, but don’t have a view at the horizon where I am, so I don’t know if I’ll see it — unless I go to the beach.

Update: the Moon sets before the start of the eclipse for East Coasters, so it will not be visible this time.

Here in Lawrence, KS, the eclipsed moon will be setting at the same time as the sun rises. A clear sky is forecast (which seems rarely the case during astronomical events)..

You’d better believe that I am not going to miss this.

I thought this little video about the eclipse
from NASA was quite intriguing:

psst…..

Speaking of the moon:

I saw this couple’s work and knew that you, of all people, needed to see it. These are such playful and imaginative photographs of the moon and the zodiac constellation/night landscape photos are just beautiful.
