Big Heart Full Moon Tonight

As we reach the fullness of the Moon in her own sign, my Cancerian soul is nearly bursting with the desire to recommit to the emerging values of the Great Mother. This Full Cancer Full Moon is an invitation to remember the sacred and the Earth as our source. It's about living as if everything and everyone matters. It's the great rebalancing underway -- that heals us from exploitation of the Earth and all life, and values of greed, corruption, triviality (nothing matters), cruelty and apathy. And instead of buying into the narratives of fear, lack and dog-eat-dog survival, we can commit to demonstrating values of caring, empathy and abundance for all.

M. Kelley Hunter writes of the Cancer Full Moon, with Sun in Capricorn, that it's "the Mother Goddess who brings back, renews, offers a cornucopia of abundance." Via her newsletter titled Sketching New Plans, she notes Mercury -- in strategic planner Capricorn -- looms large at this lunar peak with an exact square to Uranus (sudden leaps or breakthroughs) in Aries at the initiating 1 degree. Kelley writes, "Capricorn wants a plan: Uranus wants freedom to do what it will. Let's at least get the fireworks--the ideas--set up so that Uranus can fire them up. This combination of planets confronts us with limiting perspectives like, "This is the way it happens for me," or "It has always been this way," and other such outmoded thought patterns."

One switcheroo here can be re-setting authority, and sense of self worth, particularly for women. Instead of looking into the mirror of the dying patriarchal and mentally off-kilter mindset, we establish an image of dignity and self-honoring. We begin to see the beauty of loving values, and act on them in ways that make a big splash and ripple outward. It's a Full Moon to act from your sense of compassion, and dare to go beyond old stories.

The Full Moon falls on Monday, January 9th at 2:30 am (EST). For U.S. West Coasters, it's at 11:30 pm (PSST) late Sunday the 8th. London time on Monday the 9th is 7:30 am and Melbourne, Australia is at 6:30:00 PM. Here are more articles on the fullness of heart possible at this Cancer Full Moon:

  • April Elliott Kent of Big Sky Astrology with Full Moon in Cancer: Can Hard Times Make Us Whole? "Hard times can, in turn, harden us, but caring for each other - though it breaks our hearts - is what keeps us from turning to stone."
  • Cathy Lynn Pagano, Wisdom of Astrology: Cancer Full Moon, "Gratitude makes life holy, because a grateful heart gives value to everything and everyone. When we live in that awareness, our creative imagination opens up - another of Cancer's gifts - and we know how to nurture life."

Dear Molly,

Last night I drove out to the desert and saw the most extraordinary full moon I can remember. It was so brilliant and golden, it was awe-inspiring. I like the idea of equating this Cancer full moon with a fullness of heart. So many of my friends have had a difficult time this holiday, some had critically ill loved ones while other elderly friends were depressed and lonely. Your timely post is an inspiration to me to begin the New Year by sharing my feelings of compassion, love and caring. Thank you so much, Molly. I feel so blessed and grateful to have you in my life!

Anne, thank you for sharing your Full Moon experience in the desert. I experience a dip down in mood this time of year, that’s a deep cocooning, but can at times feel like depression (fine line there). It’s been a relief to re-connect to that realization of the feminine, at this Full Moon, and see where it leads in the new year. Many blessings back, and with gratitude, Molly
