Scorpio Eclipse - Which House?

By April 19, 2013

A reader writes in the forum, "I got the newsletter today about the New Moon being in Aquarius and how that affects each house - but how do I know which house applies to me?"

The first thing many know with astrology is the Sun (Zodiac) sign. So when you put your data in a chart generator, you will get the wheel -- and it will have ALL the Zodiac signs on it. The chart/wheel also has 360 degrees around.

The chart is also divided into houses, and each is 30 degrees. Your Rising Sign begins the wheel at the center left and the degrees run counter-clockwise around. And these match up with the houses, to show you where the degrees of a Full or New Moon, or eclipse will land in your chart.

The next Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse for example, is in Scorpio at 6 degrees. If your Rising sign is 0 Scorpio, say, then the eclipse falls in your first house. If Scorpio is on the cusp of your 11th house, that's the one to look at for potential whammies.

Since this eclipse excites the energies of both Taurus and Scorpio, you might look at your Taurus house too, as you muse on possibilities. Also see Eclipses in the Houses for more ideas.

In my case, this doesn’t engage any planets, but does activate the Dragon’s Head and Tail (N and S Nodes) in my chart. North is Taurus and South is Scorpio …awoke last night with sensation that I was dying (8th house rules death and life passages)….Mars is activating those nodes exactly so it could be past life impressions. So often death is metaphorical — a profound alteration where there’s no going back….

Hi Molly! My Rising is Sagittarius and my sun is Scorpio in the 12th house. My N. Node is Taurus & S. Node is Scorpio also. My moon is in 4th house Pisces, along with my Saturn. I feel something is about to happen but just don’t know what. I was also told in my horoscope by Jonathon Cain that something big is coming with the eclipse for me. Makes me nervous.

I have a question – what if the eclipse is right on the cusp of 2 houses? This is always something that confused me a bit. For example, Scorpio is my 5th house, but the first 9 degrees (according to Placidus) is still in the 4th house.
So what should I be paying attention to if the eclipse is at 6 degrees? 4th house or 5th house matters? =)

Hi Vicki,
I feel similarly – even had some nausea and wondered if it was earth/solar sensitivity. As an aside, when I first saw the chart, I thought…earthquakes and tsunamis.
I have a sense of foreboding too, but not sure if it’s personal or ….in the air…
Your horoscope probably read that way because you’re a Scorpio. Keep in mind ‘big’ can be good too.
Saturn is also in your 12th, and this can bring that sense of foreboding — facing demons and fears, and with Scorpio — what or who ties runs your energy. I would go into deep retreat, drawing on the strength of your own natal Saturn/Moon. The BIG thing could be a breakthrough with regards to your primal energies (associated with the Strength card in Tarot). Perhaps a release of energies — and trusting those energies — to put into the service of your well-being, a satisfying work life, daily practices(6th house) that help you manage the intensity of your Sun in twelfth.

Yes, I have that too in my Placidus chart. Every house begins in one sign, and enters another in that same house. Since this is a Scorpio 6 eclipse, you’d look at the 4th house.

One thing to note — Saturn is at 8 degrees at the eclipse and is in Retrograde — so it’s moved back into your 4th….and then will move forward again into your 5th. You might then see how the themes of the 4th and 5th blend — or how resolving 4th house issues give you wisdom to make the most of Saturn in your 5th. An ex could be dealing with home drama, making it your sanctuary in a deeper way — and carrying that forward into your personal creativity (5th).

Thank you for your response Molly! Argh, more 4th house stuff for me. Just went through tons of 4th house stuff the past few years with my Saturn Return over my Libra/4th house stellium. I am ready to move on!

Do you do readings? I have enjoyed reading your posts =)

Don’t know where I am with my houses dear Molly, but have Scorpio rising and moon – think I have the same nodes too, And right now I’m going through a kind of terror. Am unable to replace the job I lost, plus other difficult stuff – but it’s more than just fears about survival – think that deep trauma is coming to light. Having very vivid dreams, and I too have a sense of foreboding, of a restless earth. As usual I find your pieces so helpful and was really helped by your reply to Vicki, too. Thank you!

Hi Liz, I’m very touched by your comment. If your rising is past 6 degrees Scorp, then the eclipse is there in your first house. Otherwise the 12th. Very intense, and with your Moon at the front door like that, you’re a sponge for psychic disturbances. And it’s been a week of that — even if you don’t *watch* the news per se but pick it up in the ethers — terror and something wicked this way comes…..
Here’s an idea — your journey to deal with this terror and your traumas could be the very thing that leads to your next thing. Especially with a Scorpio first house, your *presence* can be deep for others, the archetype of the shaman, priestess, the wounded healer who guides others out of the darkness that is swirling all around us.
Much love….Molly

Thank you Molly for your insight! It is always good to hear other opinions on things especially when they can be so personal you can’t really see them for what they are. I am hoping this foreboding feeling is just in the air. Thanks!

One thing that comes to mind in a strong way with this discussion — is memento mori (remember death). This eclipse is in Scorpio, and the Dragon’s Head or North Node is also in Scorpio, not to mention reminder of limits (mortality) Saturn — whose presence is palpable these days. Also, the Lord of the eclipse is Pluto – Scorpio’s ruler, and Saturn-Pluto are in a nice dance of doom, like the skeletons of Day of the Dead….to bring to our attention deep survival fears, and angst around death.
And death can be physical, but also death of what’s known, the familiar. And transformations we go through in life — that feel like deaths — to be able to live with more embodiment (Taurus). To bring more of the soul here, where the present moment gets sharper and fuller.

Bless you, dear Molly – you are a real angel! Your words are like a light in the darkness, an answer to a prayer,. I woke up this morning with the sense that I have to open up to what I’m living through right now – that I have to be patient and bear these times, that the only way out is through, and that there is a bigger picture involved, that you”re helping me to see. And yes, you’re right, I’m picking up all the fear and angst out in the world, I’ve always been a psychic sponge. I really can’t thank you enough for you generoaity and wisdom. Much love. xxx

(13) Lish says:

My moon is in scorpio at 5 degrees in my 8th house, will this lunar eclipse effect me negatively?

April 20, 2013 at 5:26 pm
(14) Molly says:

Hello Lish,
The Moon is your most private, inner life, Mother (motherhood, issues of being a woman or r-ships with women). You could see a change or experience something related to these issues. But keep in mind that Saturn has traipsed over your Moon and is retrograding back — this can be a discouraging transit that makes you feel lonely, depressed. It’ll move off your Moon in September. But if you do feel despair/melancholy, it is an opportunity to find the right medicine for your soul. You could be experiencing a dark night of the soul — as many are at the moment.
This transit, though difficult, can make you emotionally strong and centered — self-contained and able to deal with anything. The eclipse could trigger a breakthrough, that could at first feel ‘negative’ ….but the cosmos is always communicating to urge us to grow. And with Saturn over the Moon, it’s a time of finding an unsinkable strength, core soul strength. The eclipse could hasten that process in some way.

Me again! Molly – I’m saving your wonderful replies to me and others. Realized yesterday that it’s a kind of dark night of the soul I’m going through. I’ve been looking towards the summer, to when Jupiter moves into my sun, hoping for better times – and you’ve made me realize how necessary it is to face up to and work with Saturn in Scorpio, in my rising and moon. The more aware one is, the easier it is to work with this stuff and grow from it (also have Chiron in Pisces). I’m so very grateful to you for these pearls of yours – it’s the first time I’ve been able to make sense of what I’m going through,, and I feel less alone. You’re a real treasure..

Hi, my scorpio is at 5′ 10 scorpio in the first house, with a heavy opposition to Saturn in my chart, I have a feeling that this eclipse is going to be a tough one. Any chance of knowing what’s in store for me.

April 23, 2013 at 2:12 pm
(17) Molly says:

Thank you Liz – you make it worthwhile. I think the Summer does hint at a breathing room and more honoring of the emotional side of life. Perhaps this crisis — the eclipses and the constant stress many are experiencing — is preparation to lead — as healers or artists or educators, what ever our medium. It will be especially fortunate for women, mothers and loving men – Jupiter in Cancer….

April 23, 2013 at 2:18 pm
(18) Molly says:

Hello Net,
You’re really living with Saturn as a guest full time there. You’re in a Saturn-Saturn opposition – Saturn will move back over your Sun, too since it’s retrograde.
I always find that Saturn transits help with focus, getting serious about life purpose.

Take into account that Saturn opp Sun natally can mean that you face real resistance (from others or situations) to overcome….to fulfill your full Scorpio Sun potential. I have the Sun-Saturn square, and most of my obstacles come from within – self created….
But an eclipse that lights up that native opposition could bring someone into your life to test your ability to stand in the courage of your convictions. It could be time for endings or beginnings with significant r-ships. The issue of stability — sharing resources — could figure in too.
