The Traits of Saturn in the First House

The best plan for your future is to focus on yourself

With Saturn in the First House, your Saturn is showing, and some guess you're a Capricorn. You might be saddled with responsibilities at an early age, giving you a sense of carrying the world on your shoulders. Remember, Saturn in the birth chart has to do with overcoming: limits, insecurities, and obstacles.

You're ambitious, but taken too far, this crowds out the lightness of being. The ambitious trait is magnified if you grew up in a restrictive home, where everything you did was carefully controlled. With Saturn in the First House, you yearn to be taken seriously but at the same time might fear being seen. This is the House of selfies, where you keep all your self-portraits.

Your self-image is a big deal. If you're overly defensive in this area, it can move into crippling inhibition. You long to simply "be yourself"; everyone else seems to be doing it with no problems. Keep in mind that old saying: "Don't judge your insides by other people's outsides." Still, with this Saturn, your struggle is to feel authentic and confident, which takes time and acts of courage to earn self-respect.

Developing Presence

You flourish when you take control of your overall sense of self: how you move and your appearance, vitality, and confidence. At heart is backing up your right to be. But getting that freedom means breaking through your own defenses and shedding the inauthentic bits that aren't you.

Over time, taking risks, you reach a sense of self that's evolving but defined in a Saturn-approved way. Give thought to self-promotion, your online identity, and how to be presentable in public.

In "The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology," April Elliott Kent writes on this natal Saturn, "The mentor: Teaches you to defend yourself and your boundaries, to develop a strong body and a distinctive personal 'brand' and to assert yourself appropriately."

Look to your natal Jupiter, the companion to Saturn, for ways to expand your sense of personal expression and keep your spirits lifted. When you feel pulled together, you're a natural leader, an authority, a self-directed person.

Experiencing Independence

One aspect of Saturn in Aries is taking responsibility for your actions. The urge to be independent is strong with Saturn in the First House or Aries. The idea is to act from impulse, but then over time to season that with maturity.

The goal is to become more at ease with the intensity of having Saturn, in its fall, in Aries, right at the front door. But that ease can be hard won, knowing you can project strength when you need to and take the right risks, even if it sometimes provokes others.

Saturn's delay could mean that there's a lot of angst about simply becoming who you're meant to be. This position indicates a strong will and ability to focus on singular goals. That's when the self-control of Saturn meets a self-made man or woman and the rewards come. The sweetest gift of Saturn is being at ease with who you are and knowing you're recognized by the content of your character.
