The 22 Major Arcana cards in the Tarot illustrate the main (Major) answers or guidance in a spread. Arcana is Latin for what's hidden, secret, as in occult knowledge.
These stand out in bold, as the major plot line of the seeker's story. They are universal life lessons. Each is a timeless archetype (universal symbol), that mirrors distinct patterns in our lives. That's why the Tarot is called the mirror of the soul.
Like astrology, the Tarot is a symbolic language. Most decks have numbered Major Arcana cards, starting with 0, the Fool, and ending with 21, the Universe. But the illustration, with its symbols, and sometimes astrological glyphs, evoke something that bypasses the rational mind. They are tools for opening the dialogue with your right brain, intuition and instincts. Often, the Tarot cards back up, and add depth to your understanding of whatever you're "seeking" to know.
