New Moon in Virgo
The Body Knows

By Molly Hall, About.com

Partial Solar Eclipse/NASA

This new Moon in Virgo falls on the poignantly meaningful day of September 11th, exact at 8:44 a.m. EDT. There's also a partial solar eclipse, the last one of the year, which will be visible in parts of Latin America -- see the NASA eclipse page for more info.

Just like the Full Moon in Pisces, it's an intense one with what's called a grand square. This means the Sun-Moon conjunction makes squares to Mars and Pluto, along with an opposition to the Great Awakener Uranus. Shake-ups are possible, which could come in the form of sudden epiphanies about your "life's work."

Some astrologers are predicting upheaval of the foundations, such as natural disasters. This grand square, together with Saturn in Virgo, is a push for integrity, with Pluto-inspired truthtelling possible, followed by chaos from what is revealed. This could happen in the workplace, in relationships or on the global level.

The new Moon in Virgo is a great time to look at your daily routine, and see what needs tweaking. Are you able to wind down? Could you eat more nourishing food? If there's an intriguing health idea you've wanted to try, now is an ideal time. Virgo supports a deep cleanse of all the toxins in your system, both body and mind. Some ideas for the new Moon in Virgo: adding a long amble to your daily routine, colonic irrigation therapy, exfoliate or have a facial, get rid of chemicals in your home -- you get the picture.

It's a good Moon to listen to your body, and think about its subtle messages. On the eve of September 11th six years ago, I had a vague sense of impending doom that manifested as anxiety. I happened to live in downtown Manhattan at the time in the shadow of the World Trade Center. When nothing calmed this body-level nervousness, I pulled out my Tarot cards and kept getting the ominous Tower card. Later I learned that other readers saw the Tower come up that day and after, and the impact of the event has been associated with this foundation-crumbing Major Arcana card. A friend also living in New York City had anxiety for two weeks prior. There was intense psychic forboding, which the body picked up on and expressed.

The new Moon in Virgo invites deep listening to the body. Virgo is a physically sensitive sign that goes crazy without daily release and balancing. Through aches and pains, it sends us a message that something isn't right. Sometimes we ignore it since there are fundamental stresses that we can't change. But this can lead to dis-ease, which is often a catalyst to force you to make changes. This new Moon in Virgo with Saturn's stern presence close at hand, inspires you to get to the bottom of what ails ye, even if that means bringing on disruptive change.

The new Moon is a time to set intentions that can be acted on two weeks later, in this case, on Sept 26th with the Full Moon in radiant Aries. But as the Moon wanes, it's also a time of death before the rebirth, known as the Dark Moon. These two terms are used interchangeably, and often the birth of the new comes after the death of the old way of being. This new Moon is a chance to die to self-destructive behaviors, and to a toxic lifestyle. It can be a doorway to purification, and taking bold steps on the path to wholeness again.

Ritual is not everyone's cup of tea, but a ceremonial bath might lend a sense of symbolic meaning to the new Moon. Add lavender bath oil to the water, or give a nod to the self-love of Venus in Leo with rose petals. Take your time, perhaps writing your intentions on a 7-day candle on the side of the tub. Resolve to love your body with all its imperfections, and to follow a healthy path from this day forward, as best you can.
