The new Moon in Sagittarius (Exact on Dec. 9th at 12:40 pm EST) is a time to take off your usual "thinking cap" and open to a fresh, panoramic vision. The Sun and Moon conjunct Mercury, with Jupiter-Pluto nearby, all creating a stellium in the sign of the Seeker. It's a moment to be reborn with the vision of a world philosopher, and be swept forward by the dynamism of this swift sign.
We're reaching a cosmic turning point, as Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, prepares to leave Sagittarius and move into Capricorn in early 2008. Since the mid-90s, this powerful planet has put religion to the test, and broken down outmoded ways of thinking. The volume went up on fundamentalism because of Pluto's pressure-cooker -- it showed us the hidden dangers when religious fervor meets an indoctrinated mind. This new Moon is a chance to reclaim the hopeful message of your spiritual tradition, or seek truth and knowledge as a synthesis of many faiths.
There's an emerging sense of a global village, and truth is sought that's free from dogma. Pluto's pressure to shake off nationalistic thinking hasn't kept new walls from being built, but as Gandalf says in Lord of the Rings, "even the wise cannot see all ends." Free your mind this new Moon, and consider ways to embrace the role of global citizen. The Sagittarian spirit meets the world with a disarming smile, having cast off the mask of this or that nation. Let some Sadge-inspired Wanderlust make you curious about places you'd like to see, cultures that fascinate you.
As a sign of optimism, Sadge uses its breadth of knowledge to draw up a map, one that leaves no culture or living thing behind, and come up with visionary solutions. The stellium in Sadge opens up a high-velocity portal of transformation. Some modern sages, like my own favorite teacher, Starhawk, have expressed faith that humanity will grow swiftly to meet the evolutionary challeges we're facing now. NASA just discovered a hyper-velocity star they're calling a cosmic cannonball, -- they marvel at its speed, going 3 million miles per hour, born with a one-way ticket out of the Galaxy. "Astronomers have seen other stars being flung out of the Milky Way, but few as fast as this," said NASA's Robert Petre. Perhaps letting go of what we think is possible, whether we can change fast enough to save the planet, is our greatest challenge this Sadge season.
If you're like me, and sleep more with these long, dark nights, you might consider astral travel as part of your quest. The dark Moon takes us into hidden reaches of the soul, the repository of all our experiences that still holds wisdom to draw from. It's a time of inner journeying, too, to follow threads, the recurrent themes that inspire you. What is your calling? Five planets in Sagittarius support your aspirations, and can bring renewal, especially to the house in your chart that Sadge lights up.
This new Moon, consider ways to infuse your life with the spirit of growth and adventure. It might mean taking a course that you're sure will stretch your abilities. Whether you travel or not, try to find ways to marvel at the ingenuity and diversity of world cultures. Do something active that puts color in your cheeks. Make friends with someone outside your race, religion, political outlook, etc.
Finally, this new Moon is for honoring your light, the part of you that seeks truth. It's a time to build up your spiritual resources, the books, rituals, services, etc. that help you renew your faith. If what you're doing now is falling short, it's time to seek out a new path to enlightenment. If you've gotten bogged down in the mundane, use this new Moon to do something for the sheer adventure of it. This is a time to blast off, out of your ordinary life, through cathartic acts like laughing, dancing, or being vigorously intimate. But most freeing of all is when you open your mind, and explore an inner and outer world sans frontiers.
