Sowing Seeds

New Moon Themes: pleasure, fertility, natural abundance, material security, sensuality, conservation, values, self-worth, steady creative progress, slowing down.

The new Moon in Taurus is on May 5th at 8:18 am EDT. It's a doorway to remembering your natural self -- as naked as the day you were born -- at home in the earthly garden. It's the new Moon of the blooming season, one that nourishes through that natural abundance. Taurus reminds us to slow down and savor it....truly take in what the land has given. And it's time to give back, by planting seeds and cultivating, for your future harvest.

It's an earthfest this new Moon, with a grand trine formation between the Sun-Moon-Venus in Taurus, Saturn in Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn. The trio in Taurus brings natural beauty into vogue in a big way. Ever gazed at a flower up close and just been in awe of its design? This heightens our awareness of the beauty that sometimes is taken for granted. Venus as flowerchild, with this lunation in Taurus can usher in a new aesthetic, as our local Earth Day posters read, Green is the New Black. We become smitten with all things bodacious, succulent, soft, curvy and tasty.

Lately, I've been remember what it was like growing up in the era of tube socks, feathered hair and the conservation movement. Frankly, I'm relieved to see this collective waking up to the idea of limits. Our Earth is already suffering from the excesses. Saturn in Virgo is restoring values of budgeting, doing without, and that credo of modest consumption, Live Simply, That Others May Simply Live. The presence of Pluto in cardinal Earth gives teeth to the desire for foundational change. By necessity, all signs point to our need to live in closer harmony with our home, the Earth. It's a powerful new Moon for taking your own steps big and small to be part of that collective eco-leap into the future.

It's a favorable new Moon to commit to consistent effort toward a goal. What's enhanced now is the ability to dig in, to find a rhythm that can be sustained over a period of time. If there's a dream that's seemed elusive, there's more focus and discipline in the air now to make it a reality. Years ago, I led a new Moon ritual where everyone had a little clay pot and a handful of seeds. Together we put dirt in the pots, and named our new Moon intentions, while planting them. This is one way to symbolically declare your intentions, and later cultivate the seedlings, along with your real life dreams.

Because it draws out the sensualist, this new Moon is a lusty one. It's great for reigniting the passion in your relationship, or for inviting more pleasure in. This lunation comes days after Beltane, the Celtic festival of fire, fertility and love. It's other name is May Day, when maidens with flowers in their hair dance around the phallic May pole. At Beltane, the maiden met the Horned-God or Green Man in a cave, and coupled with him anonymously. It was a sacred act, and the fruits of that meeting were considered semi-divine. Taurus embodies divine desire, because it is a creative force that sustains life. This new Moon invites us to celebrate through pleasure, the kind that nurtures the spirit, too, and brings us closer to those we love.
