There's a charged, or pre-loaded and unstable vibe, here in the US, in the aftermath of an upsetting tempest with the droll name of Sandy and on the eve of the election. Mercury, we know, is turning retrograde on the day, Tuesday at 7:04 pm EDT.
Mutual reception means that Mercury and Jupiter are in signs the other rules -- for a flip-flopped exchange. Mercury who rules Gemini, is in Sagittarius. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, is in Gemini. A tip here is to get cozy with the mantra, "I don't know." Because just when you've organized your thoughts, a new area on the horizon is flash-lit and reveals something new, and blows apart what you think you know....
Says Melody (in her newsletter), "On election day we also have Jupiter retro at 14 Gemini inconjunct the Sun at 14 Scorpio." An inconjunct -- also known as quincunx -- is an aspect with 150 degrees between planets or points (with an orb of 2 degrees in either direction). It's nigh impossible to find common ground with this aspect, and we have here fixed water (Scorpio) and mutable air (Gemini). My take is scenes that are crazymaking and intense, with a sense of life and death issues at stake. All at an apparent crossroads in American politics.
A wise friend in Oz mentioned that we're in a disinformation field, where the intent of what someone says is liable to be distorted or misread. That's the norm with Mercury retro, but it begins at 4 degrees in mutable (kaleidoscopic) Sagittarius. The speedy changes in perception, with each moment, may make it hard to act decisively. The restlessness, amped up Mercury, in its trine to higher voltage Uranus, can pop out truths that seem to call for action, but may only be one part of the picture. The desire to act on what's known (Mercury in fire sign), along with confusion with these aspects set the energetic stage for that to be ultra frustration, to the breaking point.
Melody is a kind of kindred astrologer-friend for me, and I like what she writes here: "Nerves will be more than fried and the frenzy of clashing belief systems dangerous. So, hang tight and remember the wise old owl in the tree. Too appropriately, the Sabian symbol for the Mercury retrograde degree is: An old owl sits alone on the branch of a large tree. Dane Rudhyar says that this image suggests the possibility of developing a wisdom beyond tragedy, a peace and poise beyond conflict. It is soul searching time. We are never victims of anything. Whatever happens, we will deal, we will learn, we will continue to grow and evolve."
I was given an owl wing once by a wise woman, and I love the idea of owl as a totem through this frenetic time. If we don't get tripped up and caught on one piece of the puzzle, there's a journey of discovery here, that can deepen perception. Mercury will retrograde into Scorpio, a sign of owl-sight, on the day of the New Moon in Scorpio (November 13th). So now at the retrograde, astrology assists us in seeing how we spiral into a state of "losing sight of the shore." This evokes that famous quote from André Gide: "One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight, for a very long time, of the shore." It's best met with curiosity about what's perceived, and the knowing that we'll eventually arrive at our destination, and be wiser for having made the journey.
